Description Osage Orange (Maclura pomifera)Osage Orange, also known as Hedge, Bodark, or Bois d’Arc, is a dense and durable hardwood native to North America. Historically valued for its toughness and resilience, it was once highly prized by Native Americans for making bows, giving rise to the name “Bois d’Arc” (wood of the bow). The heartwood is a vibrant golden-yellow to deep orange, which can mellow into warm brown tones with age and exposure to light. Its grain is generally straight but can occasionally be wavy, and the wood has a fine, even texture with a natural lustre. Osage Orange is extremely hard, heavy, and resistant to decay, making it suitable for outdoor use, tool handles, fence posts, and turned items. In fine woodworking, its vivid colour and durability make it a desirable choice for decorative projects, small boxes, and inlays. It also takes a high polish, enhancing its rich appearance. ⚠️ Note: Due to its natural density and hardness, Osage Orange can be challenging to work and may contain small surface checks or irregularities, especially in larger or older cuts. These are not flaws but part of its natural character.
